Kafka wants to clean up kaiju, but not literally! Will a sudden metamorphosis stand in the way of his dream?

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters。 Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju。 Kafka Hibino, a kaiju corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force and wants another shot at achieving his childhood dream of eliminating the kaiju。 But how can he expect to fight kaiju when he suddenly becomes one himself?!

Kafka hopes to one day keep his pact with his childhood friend Mina to join the Japan Defense Force。 But while she’s out neutralizing kaiju as Third Division captain, Kafka is stuck cleaning up the aftermath of her battles。 Now, thanks to a sudden eligibility rule change, Kafka has one more shot at realizing his dream。 There’s just one problem—he’s suddenly turned into a kaiju! And even worse, he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No。 8。

I enjoyed this first volume。 The plot is a little on the nose sometimes but overall the art is solid, the story is interesting, and it’s very funny。

A quick and enjoyable read。 Unfortunately, this manga felt a lot like others already out there。 Will be tuning in for the next installment。

This was pretty fun though not blown away。 So basically what we have here is Kaiju who attack cities are exterminated by a special force in Japan。 However we follow the guy who has to cleanup after the Kaiju, cut up their pieces, and get rid of them。 Good times。 Through this though we have plenty of world building and character growth, topped off with some great action moments leading into the second half which presents the guy on the cover in a interesting twist。 For a newer manga this is a lot This was pretty fun though not blown away。 So basically what we have here is Kaiju who attack cities are exterminated by a special force in Japan。 However we follow the guy who has to cleanup after the Kaiju, cut up their pieces, and get rid of them。 Good times。 Through this though we have plenty of world building and character growth, topped off with some great action moments leading into the second half which presents the guy on the cover in a interesting twist。 For a newer manga this is a lot of fun and I'm eager to see where volume 2 goes。 But I wasn't blown away by the plot or characters。 But this is normal when I start series。 Excited for volume 2 still。 A 3 out of 5。 。。。more

Japan has one of the highest Kaiju-emergence rates in the world。 Monsters terrorizing the streets are basically commonplace。 Without the Japan Defense Force, it would be chaos。 And, without the Kaiju-corpse cleanup crew, it’d be disgusting。 Unfortunately, though necessary, the job leaves little to be desired。Kafka Hibino never wanted to be on the cleanup crew。 He had dreams of being on the force, alongside his best friend Mina。 But, when he had the chance to try out for the force, he was unable Japan has one of the highest Kaiju-emergence rates in the world。 Monsters terrorizing the streets are basically commonplace。 Without the Japan Defense Force, it would be chaos。 And, without the Kaiju-corpse cleanup crew, it’d be disgusting。 Unfortunately, though necessary, the job leaves little to be desired。Kafka Hibino never wanted to be on the cleanup crew。 He had dreams of being on the force, alongside his best friend Mina。 But, when he had the chance to try out for the force, he was unable to pass the exam。Now, Mina is a third division captain on the force while Kafka is stuck cleaning up monster guts from the streets。 Not very glamorous。He’s all but given up on his dreams when he suddenly undergoes a transformation — one that gives him the ability to transform into a Kaiju himself — Kaiju no 8。 It’s an unexpected and, not entirely welcome, change。 But, the physical enhancement he gets from this new ability makes him finally an eligible candidate for the force。Can Kafka become a Kaiju exterminator when he is a Kaiju? More, what will happen to him if the force discovers that he is actually Kaiju no 8, the current monster non grata of Japan? So, this is a super sick and enjoyable manga so far! It’s call sweet art, interesting characters, and a compelling plot — everything you want in a good shonen。 I’m SO looking forward to reading more~ 。。。more

What a fantastic start to this series!! This was appropriately hyped by a friend of mine, and with good reason! The humor was extremely up my valley, and while it didn't take itself too seriously, it was grounded enough to justify its premise。 I am v upset that I now have to wait for volume two。 What a fantastic start to this series!! This story is a delight! I've been reading it as the chapters have been rolling out, and I am not disappointed。 I think it's an interesting take on the Shonen genre (as everyone has been saying: the adult protagonist)。While kaiju aren't new, especially to the SJ field, this series has amazing potential。 As I'm typing this out, there are only 52 chapters (soon to be 53) and I couldn't ask for more。 Kafka is such an intriguing character。 He is unlike many Shonen Jump protagonists as I often find m This story is a delight! Kaiju are invading Japan (because Japan) and when the Japanese Defense Force dispatches them, well, somebody has to clean up the mess。 Enter Kafka, who dreams of fighting alongside his childhood friend Mina while mopping up。 But when an accident causes Kafka to undergo a metamorphosis, making the cut in the next round is the least of his worries…I divide my shonen into two categories, basically, fun and not-fun。 Not fun is typically self-serious and involves a lot of women-as-trophies I can do w Kaiju are invading Japan (because Japan) and when the Japanese Defense Force dispatches them, well, somebody has to clean up the mess。 Enter Kafka, who dreams of fighting alongside his childhood friend Mina while mopping up。 But when an accident causes Kafka to undergo a metamorphosis, making the cut in the next round is the least of his worries…I divide my shonen into two categories, basically, fun and not-fun。 Not fun is typically self-serious and involves a lot of women-as-trophies I can do without。 There are exceptions, but that’s generally how it goes。The more infrequent ‘fun’ ones are ones like, well, this。 They take themselves exactly as seriously as they should when they should and have an absurd amount of gags flying about when they aren’t。 This book runs the gamut of dire situations to gut-busting slapstick and it handles all the tonal changes very well。The premise of cleaning up after kaiju battles and the danger inherent to it is so much fun that I would have read an entire workplace comedy based on that。 Seriously, I want to see them trying to get all the Mothra pollen off everything and the silly string from that spider? Nightmare fuel。Instead we get to see Kafka being good at his job and being egged on by his straight man, the much younger Ichikawa, as the two basically take one another under their wings to try and realize the collective dream of joining the JDF。 Ichikawa comes off as a real butt, but he ends up being a great addition to the cast very early on。Once these two finally get together in light of a kaiju attack that showcases their individual skills, it’s a lot of fun。 There is, smartly, so much comedy in this series that even if half of it is tired, the other half that land are actually really good and the quantity is more than enough to make it work。 You’re a better person than me if you don’t at least crack a smile during the urination gag。I especially enjoyed Hoshino, who administers the JDF entrance exam, being an absolute jerk about Kafka and Ichikawa, to the extent he wants to admit them for comedy purposes。 The author’s note about why the JDF outfits look like they do made my day as well - I appreciate the honesty。And when Kafka turns into a cockro… uh, kaiju of his very own, we get some really well done action sequences out of it that are nice and easy to follow and really well done。 Plus they mine his transformation to death for an endless stream of good comedy beats and Ichikawa is perfect as the other half in the duo。The art here is gorgeous - it handles action and comedy with a very deft hand and knows just how gory is gory enough。 Much like the writing it has an impeccable sense of balance for these things and some of the huge spreads are wonderful。Some things work better than others - the hotshot 16-year-old girl getting hosed because of circumstances treats her better than I would have thought (Kafka comes through with an affirmation she really needs when she needs it), though her dad being cut and pasted out of Bad Manga Dad Monthly is far less exciting。And I’m having a serious problem with that tiger。 Like, it’s entire existence absolutely baffles me。 It should not be that domestic - did Sigfried & Roy teach us nothing!? All that aside, this is a strong start to a series and I am more than happy to increase my comparatively small shonen reading pile by one to see where it’s headed。3。5 stars - we’ll round up because this one is pretty great and I have expectations for it that, more than usual, I am hoping it will meet。 It’s a really well realized beginning for a style that’s not always my jam。 。。。more

Interesting start to what looks like a bloody fish out of water redemption action dramedy。 With monsters! Crisp art, an engaging main character, side characters who look like they at least have the potential to be a little more than archetypes, and some interesting world building around Kaijus。 Looks like it will be fun if a little tropey in plot。 **Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review。

Ok, this was on of the more fun, imaginative thing's I read this year。 Kafka Hibino is the protagonist dreaming of working for Japan's Defense Force, who are an elite group of fighters that help bring down kaiju as they pop up around the country。 His dream from childhood was to join with his friend Mina and he was going to look out for her, however the reality is she's the Third Division captain and he's a lowly member of the clean up team。 Somebody has to dispose of these giant monsters once they are dead and Kafka is one of the poor laborers stuck cleaning up intestines and blood。 A new member joins the cleanup team and asks the "old man" (who's only 32!) why he gave up on his dream? Kafka is inspired to try again, to impress Mina and to make a real difference。 He saves his new friend from a not-quite-dead kaiju, but they both get injured in the process。 While recuperating in the hospital Kafka is steeling himself for a new shot the Defense Force enlistment test when a tiny flying monstrosity dives directly into his mouth and possesses him。 Suddenly he's a kaiju himself and while he still has his faculties it's tough to look like a kaiju and have that level of strength and not draw attention。I thought this was different and fun in a lot of ways。 I love that it starts with Kafka working on the kaiju clean up crew because it's a point of view we never get。 Someone has to deal with this sort of thing, but rarely do we look at that job。 This also lends itself to a lot of humor。 As a 32 year old Kafka is old for a manga protagonist (don't get me started), but it's also a brilliant choice for the story that Naoya Matsumoto is telling。 32 is old enough to have some regrets, some bigger questions, and the pressure of making up for lost time。 It's a small, but important detail and I think that's what this story does so well; small but important details。 I'm as excited for where this story is going and what's next as I am for just about anything else ongoing right now。 This wasn't too over the top in any one direction, struck a really nice balance and has a ton of potential。 - One of my favorites this year for sure。 。。。more
